Creating and Sustaining Meaningful Library Services for Incarcerated People and People in Reentry
People who are incarcerated need access to library services. Implementing these services takes thoughtful planning and a broad understanding of how jails, juvenile detention centers, and prisons function. This session will provide background information and examples of existing library services for people negatively impacted by incarceration. It will cover a range of topics--from physical mail to digital access—and will highlight concerns and possible solutions along the way.

Cultivating the Future for Staff & Customers
Future thinking is an important skill to help build more resilient communities. A group of Harford County Public Library staff, funded by a grant from the Maryland State Library Agency, created a future thinking training for all library staff. A small group of staff received additional training to create and present future thinking skills to teens and emerging adults. At this preconference, participants will have a chance to experience the training that was done for library staff, and find out more about the programming for the public. They will also leave with the knowledge and resources to create a program of their own.

Introduction to Political Power Theories
98% of library funding relies on the political will of voters and politicians. If libraries want to
increase or maintain library funding, they have to build political power and influence. There
are a wide range of tactics that can be used to build and influence this power, but what are the underlying political advocacy theories that can be applied to all of the activities performed by a library? In this session we will explore many of the tools, tactics, and strategies used by some of the best community organizers, political action committees, and politicians and discuss applying them to librarianship.

Keynote Speaker: Hilton Carter
Hilton Carter is an American freelance filmmaker, interior designer, plant stylist, and author. He grew up in Baltimore and gained fame majorly as a plant enthusiast. Hilton found his true calling as a plant stylist while working for an advertising agency. What he started as a novice with a few succulents in New Orleans has now become an empire, more appropriately a “green empire.”

Hilton owns an apartment space in Baltimore, with a plethora of indoor plants, which he has now turned into a studio for photo blogging. He has garnered recognition on 'Instagram,' and his ‘Instagram’ account majorly features his most favorite “green pet,” “Frank.” He is often called “the plant doctor,” and makes appearances in 'Apartment Therapy’s plant-themed 'Instagram' account, '@iplanteven.' Hilton also owns a shopping website for his self-designed plant accessories. His book about plant-parenting, Wild at Home: How to Style and Care for Beautiful Plants, released in April 2019.

Supporting Immigrant Youth’s Civic Engagement
Immigrant youth bring different cultures and perspectives to civic life in the U.S. and can benefit from learning opportunities outside of school, especially in libraries, spaces they seldom engage with. This presentation will share findings from a participatory study with immigrant youth, library, and after-school educators to support immigrant youth as they identify ways to civically engage and learn to combat mis/disinformation and fake news. I will highlight the perspectives of youth, including the support they indicated they need from staff, their interests, and how they wish to participate and develop literacy to examine digital information and respond critically.

Cultivating Romance Readers’ Advisory for Adults and Teens
Romance is a genre that is in high demand by library users, but still faces a lot of stigma. A lot of people, including library staff, do not want to admit that they read romance, and this can lead to incomplete readers' advisory interactions between staff and patrons.

We will break down some of this stigma and help staff have more meaningful and successful romance readers' advisory. Our focus will be on both adult and teen readers since both age groups have interest in the romance genre but have very different needs.

Early-Career Librarians Branch Out: Reflections from the First Year
Three early-career librarians share their experiences entering the world of academic librarianship and how new staff members can invigorate a library. All three presenters came from the same MLIS program at University of Maryland, College Park, and will reflect on how their shared educational experiences helped them hit the ground running in their new positions. During this session, the presenters will discuss how they diverged beyond their shared MLIS background, their unique onboarding processes, impressions of transitioning from students to professionals, and recommendations for welcoming new librarians and staff to your library. We welcome any fellow early-career librarians and anyone planning or thinking about hiring new staff members or who are in the onboarding process!

Graphic Medicine: Planting the Seeds for Health Literacy
Graphic medicine is the intersection of health and wellness with comic books. It is an innovative way to process and understand health information as well as to promote empathy and understanding regarding chronic health conditions. The DHSS Library is the first library in Delaware to house a Graphic Medicine collection, which includes graphic novels, memoirs, and illustrated texts related to healthcare, wellness, and social issues. The DHSS Librarians will provide an overview of graphic medicine, explain the ways graphic medicine promotes health literacy, review how to start a collection at your library, and help you illustrate your own health experience. Don’t miss out on this great way to “plant the seeds” for patron health literacy.

Time Capsules: Preserving our Collective Memories
Time Capsules are created with the hope of sharing present experiences with future communities, and their interment and discovery are often of great community and local media interest. But whose responsibility is it to select, handle, or preserve the materials and how should this be done? Using the time capsules already discovered and processed as well as the one most recently created by Delaware State University and its archives, this presentation explores the role of time capsules in local history. Topics include: the types of time capsules institutions may work with; the idea of “collective memory” and how time capsules can shape future perceptions of the present; and some of the best practices and current literature available for those planning to exhume, process, and preserve a recently found capsule.

Journey Through and Beyond the Fence: Assisting Incarcerated Individuals in the Reentry and Workforce Development Process
Learn about current library programs that assist incarcerated individuals in overcoming barriers to parole, reentry and employment. This session will highlight library programs in the Maryland prison system that encourage, teach and cultivate the skills needed for successful transition to the community and the world of work. Correctional libraries plant the seeds of hope and success among this underserved population so that they can and will have a successful life outside the prison walls. We will also explore some ways that public libraries can partner with correctional libraries to assist the formerly incarcerated to succeed in the workforce and to reduce recidivism.

Climate change has been called our generation's grandest challenge, a "code red for humanity," and is predicted to profoundly affect the health of every child alive today. Join Rebekkah Smith Aldrich, Co-Founder and Board President of the Sustainable Libraries Initiative, to untangle this very complex issue and learn how more than 100 libraries across the country are stepping up to tackle this challenge by modeling best practices and working to be catalysts for a just transition to a new way of thinking about the future.

LGBTQ+ History in The Library: Cultivating Audiences Through Community Engagement
For the past 5 years, librarians from the Enoch Pratt Free Library have worked to provide programming related to local LGBTQ+ history to audiences across the state. By involving community elders, reaching out to local organizations, and connecting with youth groups, we have both found and cultivated an audience interested in a deeply underrepresented topic. In this program we’ll discuss our experiences doing this, what’s worked and what hasn’t, and reflect on how this might be applied to libraries and those planning library programs across Maryland and Delaware.

Cultivating an Inclusive Environment: Engagement and Outreach in Academic and Public Libraries
Engagement is the key to student success and patron support, and diversity and inclusion lead the way to reaching new patrons and meeting current patrons where they are. Revisiting new and old methods of engagement with patrons can build an environment where they feel supported, involved, and seen. In this presentation, learn how a large academic library is using traditional orientation tables, innovative transfer programs, and book displays with a diversity focus to reach minoritized groups and solidify the library as a welcoming environment. Public library programming will be compared to the academic setting, and suggestions on how to scale and and translate these programs into school and special libraries will be presented.
